About Us

The Saginaw, Swan Creek and Black River Bands are made up of Anishinaabe people from three bands and are a part of the larger Anishinaabe people in Michigan. These three bands have historically worked together as one. We have our own unique cultural history and governance within the broader Chippewa nation.

Our tribe has a rich history in the Eastern region of what is now Michigan. For centuries, our ancestors thrived in this area before the arrival of European settlers. However, as time passed, our lands were gradually claimed by these newcomers.

Today we continue to live with resilience, strength and perseverance.  We strive to practice our cultural activities, remember our heritages, and pass down our histories from generation to generation.
